8 Disney Theme Park Rides That Were Turned Into Films
6. Mission To Mars
You've probably never even heard of this film, despite it being directed by Brian De Palma with a cast consisting of Don Cheadle, Gary Sinise and Tim Robbins. That sums up pretty nicely how big of an impact it left on people when it was released in 2000.
The ride it is loosely based on is the attraction of the same name, Mission To Mars. The ride was a frequently re-skinned theater found in Tomorrowland that was originally 'Flight to the Moon', a motion-simulator that allowed guests to experience, you guessed it, a flight to the moon. Unfortunately for Disney, NASA's actual missions to the moon made the ride feel outdated very quickly, meaning it was later re-branded to Mission To Mars.
Although the attraction is more of an educational experience, the film adaptation followed a group of astronauts on their trip to Mars, and what occurs when they visit. Despite good visuals, the impressive cast struggled to deliver the poor dialogue and the story was heavily disjointed and hokey.
