7. The Ghostbusters Died Battling Gozer
The Theory: At the end of Ghostbusters the heroes cross the streams of their proton packs in order to defeat evil god Gozer, causing a massive explosion on top of a skyscraper. Aside from being covered in Marshmallow and soot, theyre all fine.
This lucky outcome goes against Egons warning that crossing streams would vaporise them all. And that's why some people interpret the ending to mean that they died, and the final scene is their dying thoughts before crossing to the spirit world.
Why It's Dumb: Because nothing in Ghostbusters supports this idea. Egons warning was dire, but he also said there was a slim chance theyd survive. There was also a direct sequel where everyone is very much alive. To explain the sequel the people behind this theory extend it further, stating Ghostbusters 2 takes place in some kind of purgatory. This is why it has almost the same plot as the original, just with some details tweaked.
This twisted logic opens up a wider plot hole if correct. If the Ghostbusters are now ghosts, then what exactly are they busting?
