8 Dumb Movie Fan Theories That People Actually Believe

2. James Bond Is Really A Codename For MI6's Top Agent

MGM/Columbia Pictures

The Theory: One of the most popular fan theories is that James Bond isn€™t really one man, but a codename assigned to the top agent of MI6, and when one agent retires or dies the name is passed to his successor. This would explain why Bond changes faces and personality every decade or so. For example, there isn€™t much similarity between Roger Moore€™s quip happy Bond and Timothy Dalton€™s solemn assassin.

Other pieces of evidence include George Lazenby making a meta joke in On Her Majesty€™s Secret Service about how €œThis never happened to the other follow€, referring to Connery€™s Bond. An early script for Die Another Day even flirted with making this idea canon, which would have allowed previous Bond actors to cameo.

Why It's Dumb: Continuity has never been a strong point in the series, but producers have made it clear Bond is intended to be the same man. If he wasn't then it makes no sense for Connery to be avenging Lazenby€™s wife in the opening of Diamonds Are Forever, or for Roger Moore to lay flowers on her grave. This happens because they€™re all the same dude.

Skyfall definitively laid this theory to rest, with Bond returning to his childhood home. He visits his parent€™s grave and his backstory as an orphan adopted by MI6 was made official.
