1. Alien 3 And Resurrection Are Dreams Ripley Is Having In Hypersleep
The Theory: Alien 3 was widely criticised for killing off Newt and Hicks in the opening moments, and then ending with Ripley dying too. It was a gut punch to lose three well liked characters, and their deaths rendered the ending of Aliens pointless. In order to give her the happy ending she deserves, some fans believe Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection to be nightmares Ripley is having in her hypersleep chamber.
At the end of Aliens, Ripley puts Newt into her chamber and the little girl asks if she can dream. Ripley replies they both can. The last shot is the two of them sleeping. Now given her recent past its understandable she'd have some bad dreams, just not really elaborate ones with three act structures
Why It's Dumb: This theory is about rewriting the plot because some people didn't like the outcome. This interpretation was never intended by the filmmakers and Weaver herself had a big hand in the Alien 3s story, including Ripleys death. She wanted to end the series and move on, only returning for Resurrection because of the money.
And just like Total Recall, the dream logic would only make sense if Ripley appeared in every scene instead of cutting away to other characters, as both films do repeatedly.
That said, if Neill Blomkamp needs to come up with a way to ignore the last two movies this could be canonised.
