8 Essential Coen Brothers Films You Must Watch

3. A Serious Man

No Country For Old Men 1280x720
Focus Features

Questions of fate, family and misfortune abound in A Serious Man, one of the brothers' most mature films to date. Whereas Fargo still maintained that the good will always overcome the bad in the end, there is no such certainty on display here, and the Coens seem insistent that sometimes bad things happen to good people.

Luckily, it is not all dour and depressing. There is still an element of comedy in A Serious Man that the Coens have clearly perfected in portraying. You will be engrossed in this film and find yourself rooting for its hero to come out on top, even when it seems clear that there is no winning in this sobering exploration of faith, family, and even mortality.

A Serious Man is undeniably an essential Coen brothers film, one that is best viewed and enjoyed once you are already well-acquainted with their strange body of work.
