8 Essential Coen Brothers Films You Must Watch
1. Inside Llewyn Davis
There is no denying that No Country For Old Men is still the Coens' most stylish and technically-proficient film, and that everyone and their nan should watch it. But for true Coen brothers enthusiasts, Inside Llewyn Davis is absolutely essential viewing because it may just be the brothers' most personal, touching, and profound film to date.
Watching Inside Llewyn Davis allows viewers to look at every previous Coen films through a new lens, and with even more appreciation. It is difficult not to compare the titular protagonist with the folks who created him, who absolutely shared that same existential, Sisyphean struggle at some point in their career.
To their credit however, the Coens came out on top and broke the cycle of failure and disappointment that so many artists experience throughout their lives. Because of that, Inside Llewyn Davis sometimes feels like a "what if" scenario in which the Coens never made it, and in which we as audiences never got to experience their greatest works.
Luckily, reality is far less horrifying than that - and this film adds a new layer of appreciation, admiration, and love for Hollywood's greatest directing duo.
