8 Exciting Upcoming Comic Book Movies You Need To Know About (That Aren’t Marvel Or DC)

3. Aleister Arcane

The Comic: Written by Steven Niles and illustrated by Breehn Burns, the story focuses on horror-enthusiast Aleister Arcane, a TV host who is forced off the air at the behest of concerned local parents. As a result of Arcane's premature retirement (and subsequent death), the town is thrust into chaos and horror.

The Movie: The story will focus on a group of children who befriend Arcane, and once he's dead, must work to undo the curse he laid upon the town before he passed.

In what might be one of the most inspired casting choices in recent memory, Jim Carrey (Arcane looks a lot like him) boarded the film adaptation in June 2016, along with director Eli Roth and production company Amblin. Since then, all has been quiet.

But interestingly, Roth just directed The House With A Clock In Its Walls, a well-received family-friendly horror that would seem like the perfect tone/general direction for an Aleister Arcane movie to take. The key factor here is that Clock was produced by Amblin, the studio that's developing Arcane. Roth's connection with Amblin - and his work on Clock - bodes very well for the Arcane movie, and the director even said as much in a recent chat with EW:

"I was going to - and I’m still supposed to - direct an adaptation of a graphic novel called Aleister Arcane with Jim Carrey, which is an even crazier Gremlins-Beetlejuice-type movie. And the writer has been working on the script and it’s just the timing of it didn’t work out with the script, and then The House With a Clock in Its Walls came in and I was almost pre-approved at Amblin to do this type of movie."

So if Clock was Amblin's test bed for a spooky family movie directed by Roth, then perhaps they'll now be inclined to push ahead with their Arcane adaptation. Roth's schedule is now relatively clear, so maybe we'll hear something soon.
