3. Stanley Kubrick Enjoyed Bad Stuff Happening In Bathrooms
As Seen In... Lolita, A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, Full Metal Jacket, Eyes Wide Shut Trying to work out how many trademarks there are inherent to Stanley Kubrick's filmography is like trying to stop John Glen from including an animal scare in one of his Bond movies: totally impossible. Kubrick was a perfectionist and a director of incredible intelligence, of course, which means his movies are littered with all kinds of aspects that could be considered "trademarks," to the point where trying to separate them all begins to feel like a torturous exercise in futility. For some of the more obvious ones, of course, you might consider his use of classical music, or his frequent use of narration. One that you might not have picked up on, though? Bathrooms. Kubrick really had a thing about bad things happening in bathrooms, which may bring back memories of that grim suicide in Full Metal Jacket, various scenes in The Shining (one of which involves a old naked lady), or the scene in Lolita where Humbert Humbert finds out Lolita's mother has died - he's in the tub at the time.
