8 Famous Movie Endings People Always Get Totally Wrong

3. Taxi Driver (1976)

Paramount

The Ending... Having survived a bloody battle against a pimp and his associates in order to save a young prostitute, mentally ill Vietnam veteran Travis Bickle comes to find that he has been deemed a hero by the media in the aftermath. He resumes work as a taxi driver, where he picks up the same woman who rejected him earlier in the movie, though her attitude towards him has changed, and she treats him with respect.

What Everybody Thinks... "Aw, great. I'm so glad Travis is okay. Maybe he's cured!"

But Wait... Despite its vague and relatively ambiguous nature, both Martin Scorsese and writer Paul Schrader have acknowledged that their own intentions with the Taxi Driver ending were not of the happy variety - Travis' strange final glance into the rear view mirror is supposed to signify that he's something of a time bomb - and one which might exploded at any moment.

Schrader went as far as to say that Travis will likely attempt something else reckless soon enough and that he probably die in the process.
