8 Famous Movie Endings People Always Get Totally Wrong

2. The Graduate (1967)

United Artists

The Ending... Having shirked responsibility and gone slightly insane over the course of the movie, recent graduate Benjamin Braddock decides to go stop his ex-girlfriend Elaine from getting married and crashes the wedding. She accepts this decision, and the two escape from the church whilst Benjamin fights her relatives off with a crucifix.

The pair jump onto a bus and manage to get away. They sit, shocked and pumped with adrenaline, before falling into a silence.

What Everybody Thinks... "Well, wasn't that nice? I hope those crazy kids can keep it together!"

But Wait... Arguably the king of misread movie endings (see: 500 Days of Summer), The Graduate is frequently viewed to have an ending of happy proportions. I mean, the two main characters manage to get away, right? And Benjamin's gesture - though unorthodox - really was romantic, wasn't it?

Maybe those things are true, but read between the lines and the ending to this one is actually pretty sad. Having foolishly indulged in moment without really thinking about the consequences, Ben and Elaine quickly fall into silence, and - by the looks on their faces - begin to instantly wonder if they've made the right decision.

Their facial expressions are awkward and confused. Their anxiety for the future is apparent. They're young and dumb and - worst of all - probably unsure as to how they actually feel about one another.
