8 Films That Were Made Solely To Hold Onto Rights

4. Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance

Amazing Spider-Man
Columbia Pictures

Despite being a total piece of crap the original Ghost Rider was a decent sized hit, but the studio seemed lukewarm about its chances as a long-term franchise. This led to years of development on a sequel, but once they realised they had to start production by a certain date to keep the character, they threw a new film into production.

With exactly half the budget of the original, the film was handed over to the directors of Crank, who did their best to liven up what is basically a weird remake of Terminator 2. The film also ignored the original for the most part, by adding an alternate origin story for the character.

For a film that was essentially produced for copyright reasons Spirit Of Vengeance is better than it should be, and it helps that Nic Cage is giving an even hammier performance than usual. Despite making a profit there was no further attempt at sequels, and the rights to the character reverted back to Marvel.

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
