5. Slenderman

The infamous winner of the Something Awful Photoshop competition, it wasn't long until the fictional tale of the Slenderman was made all too real. Regaling the tale of an incredibly tall, faceless entity that steals children, creator Eric Knudsen made numerous photographs that appear normal until you look closely - where the creature can be seen lurking, waiting to take its prey. One of the most recognised constructs of creepypasta to date, Slenderman has a marked place in pop culture history, and a slew of films and fiction attributed to his name.

The popularity of the Slenderman has risen to such a degree that two young teens attempted to murder their friend as an offering in 2014, with other incidents such as house fires and suicides also linked back to the creature. Of course, this caught the all-seeing blazing eye of Mordor - I mean Hollywood - with a fully fledged theatrical release scheduled for later this year.

YouTube series Marble Hornets and documentary Beware the Slenderman have already covered ground on the mythology, but this will be the first widely accessible feature length movie to bring the entity to the mainstream. Essentially a giant man in a morph suit with tentacles more akin to hentai, it's another perfect example of the internet taking something utterly crazy and running with it, turning the original post into something beautifully fleshed out in all its horrific facets.
