8 Great Characters Marvel Movies Have Completely Screwed Up
6. Maria Hill
I like Cobie Smulders' take on Maria Hill, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe's version of the S.H.I.E.L.D. agent is a poor imitation of her comic book counterpart. While she's always fought for what's right, that Maria has never been a fan of superheroes and seemed to take great delight in attempting to arrest Captain America when he defied the Superhuman Registration Act in Civil War. She's so utterly ruthless that she even arrested and unmasked Spider-Man (before he revealed his secret identity to the world) and used a psychic to extract information from him! A deleted scene from The Avengers revealed that Joss Whedon did at least consider making his Maria Hill a little rougher around the edges, but we've yet to see that from her. Now, she parties with Earth's Mightiest Heroes rather than standing against them because she realises what a threat they pose to the world, and that's basically transformed her into Nick Fury-lite. Perhaps Marvel knowing that S.H.I.E.L.D. wouldn't be a permanent fixture in this world led to this, especially as The Winter Soldier came out so soon after The Avengers that we never really would have had a chance to enjoy seeing her in command of the spy organisation and not being anywhere near as accommodating to the heroes as Fury was. That too is a mistake though, and with no signs of Smulders being given an interesting and satisfying arc in one of the upcoming Phase 3 movies, Maria Hill is someone who has faded into the background when she really should be commanding the screen.
