8 Great Directors Who Have Made More Bad Movies Than Good

7. Kevin Smith

Kevin-Smith-800x960The Good:Clerks, Red StateThe Bad:Mallrats, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Zack and Miri Make A Porno, Jersey Girl, Cop Out You might argue Kevin Smith's place on this list as a "great" director, and although I'm not a huge Smith fan personally speaking, I know that he has a large and very dedicated fanbase, and is considered big enough throughout Hollywood in so much as I'm including him anyway. I don't know why his work grates on me, though... I'm the immense, pop culture-loving nerd that you need to be as a Kevin Smith fan, but I can't get into most of his flicks, no matter how hard I try. That's to say, Clerks is a good movie, and I can see why it has amassed such a cult following. I also, bizarrely, enjoyed Red State, because it wasn't quite so Smith-y as the rest of his pictures, I guess. As for the remainder of his movies? I find them kind of bewildering in their badness. It's as if Smith opts to just film his first drafts and just shoots his movies without much thought, ignoring all the fundamental basics of good filmmaking.
