8 Great Horror Movies With Only One Character

2. Buried

The Shallows
Lionsgate

Moving on from Blake Lively, let's talk about her husband, Ryan Reynolds. These two certainly have some scary stories to share at the dinner table. If The Shallows had a minimal plot, then Buried is sub-atomic, as the flick takes place in one incredibly claustrophobic setting, with one single character.

Buried is an entirely haunting movie that will stick with you for a long time. It shows an American Truck driver working in Iraq called Paul Conroy (Reynolds) being kidnapped and buried alive. His captors attempt to ransom him, and the movie follows his exploits as he tries to survive, with only a zippo light, a pen and a phone.

For many people, the idea of being buried alive is the absolute worst way to die, and this is completely understandable. If you hate the idea of enclosed spaces, then being stuck underground, as the sand around you begins to fill your tiny coffin must be haunting, and this film ultimately plays to that.

Reynolds does a great job in the leading role, as he keeps you engaged throughout the film, even though he never moves from his entrapment. The flick also masterfully keeps the plot moving forward, despite the lack of visual spectacle, and is a great example of how much you can do with a good script, and a great actor.
