8 Great Horror Movies With Only One Character
3. The Shallows
At least the characters in Jaws had a team ready to fight the big bad shark, poor Blake Lively had to fend for herself.
The Shallows follows Nancy (Lively) a surfer who finds herself outcast 200 metres from the shore, being stalked by a great white shark. The idea of being stuck in shark-infested waters is terrifying enough, but the thought of having to get back to land whilst caring for your devastating wounds is worse.
Although the film runs just shy of an hour and a half, it never gets dull, as Nancy is a strong character with determination and will. Her fight to survive this awful scenario fills the movie with a forward momentum that keeps it ploughing ahead, despite the very minimal set-up.
The villain of the piece - our great white shark - is completely ruthless, and battling against the creature is equal parts scary yet believable. Sometimes you don't need a supernatural situation, or a twisted story when nature itself is this frightening.
