Inspired by the likes of I Am Legend and Dawn of the Dead, Geoff Murphy's cult classic follows scientist Zac Hobson's journey through a post-apocalyptic New Zealand where an energy experiment has seemingly caused the disappearance of all other life on earth.

As portrayed by Bruno Lawrence, Zac's eerie trip through an empty world where time appears just to have stopped is both fascinating and matter of fact, but it's the film's progression where Lawrence's behaviour becomes more and more ridiculous that makes it so watchable in the early stages.

The addition of two new characters partway through the film breaks the "one character" rule but keeps things fresh, upping the stakes without shifting the focus too far away from Zac's experience.

Released in 1985, the film's modern-day setting means that the technology on display is delightfully retro and the large scale scenes of destruction and vast, empty public areas are suitably impressive for the time, as is the film's final scene.
