8 Great Sci-Fi Movies With Only One Main Character (Most Of The Time)

4. Oxygen (2021)

Under The Skin Scarlett Johansson
Netflix

Oxygen is a French-language film that mixes elements of science fiction, mystery and psychological horror. The movie stars Melanie Laurent as an unknown woman who, following a malfunction, wakes up in a medical cryogenic unit and faces a race against time to figure out what's going on before her air supply runs out.

The entire film, save for a few flashback shots and a big reveal towards the end, is set entirely inside the cryogenic chamber (think something like Buried or Phone Booth). It's claustrophobic, tense and often channels the hysterical panic of the trap scenes from the Saw franchise.

Laurent does a fantastic job of holding your attention throughout, but if you're watching the film on Netflix make sure you stick with the original French audio as the English dubbing can easily pull you out of the experience.

Oxygen is unlikely to win any awards for originality but remains an engaging sci-fi thriller that combines a number of familiar sci-fi concepts.
