7. Cotton Marcus - The Last Exorcism

Daniel Stamm's The Last Exorcism centres on a group of documentary filmmakers showcasing a sceptical reverend who is on a mission to prove that the concept of exorcism is a sham.

That reverend is Cotton Marcus (Patrick Fabian), with his faith shattered after his son was born with an illness. Here, Marcus is out to deal with the supposed demonic possession of Nell Sweetzer (Ashley Bell).

As Cotton goes in with the mindset that Nell's issue are all psychological or outright faked, the finale of The Last Exorcism shows that the young woman is indeed very much troubled by a demon - and that most of her town are part of some twisted satanic cult that's headed up by the local priest.

Once the penny drops that the pregnant Nell really is possessed - and about to give birth to an inhuman child - Marcus rushes back to the Sweetzer farm, where he's confronted by the aforementioned satanic cult as Nell gives birth.

It's here, literally rushing into the fire, that Cotton has his "I'm dead and I know it" moment. He puts himself in the crosshairs of this cult while requesting help from a god who he has long since disowned - and a god who has not arrived to save him.
