After over a decade of being near-impossible to track down in most markets, it now looks like Lake Mungo is finally set to get the universal adoration that Joel Anderson's 2008 movie deserves; that being largely down to how Second Sight has recently given the film a crammed Blu-ray release, while likewise the film has now landed on Shudder.

While Lake Mungo is very much classified as a horror movie that spends so much of its time framed as a found footage vehicle due to the documentary being made at the core of the picture, the film is more about grief and dealing with loss than it is about all-out terror.

At the heart of this movie, we have the family of Alice Palmer (Talia Zucker) trying to cope with her death and the secrets uncovered about this 16-year-old. Using mobile phone footage, we see plenty of Alice throughout the film, with her scarily aware that her death is looming large.

During the vast majority of these videos, we find an Alice who is troubled, who is constantly watching her surroundings and who fears that something bad is about to happen to her - that "something" being her drowning in the titular lake.

The 'dead and I know it' moment comes in the flick's most effective scene, where Alice literally bumps into her drowned, bloated corpse. It's a horrifying image, and serves as the most obvious omen for the character that there's no avoiding her inevitable fate.
