8 Hollywood Blockbusters That Are Guilty Of BS Science

6. Human Batteries Use More Energy Than They Provide - The Matrix

Another fantastic film praised at release for the originality of the writers'/directors' futuristic vision and the melding of computer-nerdery, kung fu and extraordinary special effects, but whose premise is based on bunkum. For those who haven't seen it so probably nobody in the entire world - The Matrix depicts a dystopian future in which machines have taken over the world. Naturally, these machines require fuel of some kind to function, so they harvest humans as their primary energy source, like fleshy batteries. But Wait... Unfortunately, it must be said the film's major premise is flawed. While it sounds cool, and is appropriately creepy when played out on screen, the idea falls apart when you look into things are little more closely. In fact, the problem reveals itself after the most cursory of examinations. What many viewers will ask themselves (quite rightly) is why extract energy from humans at all, isn't that a bit uneconomical? Living organisms produce heat energy, but not enough to justify feeding them and keeping them alive, especially when doing so would require more energy than a human being would yield. This is all uncomfortably utilitarian, but wouldn't it make more sense to derive energy from the source you're keeping the humans alive with? Or better - nuclear?
