8 Horror Movie Characters That Stupidly Turned Evil In The Sequel

5. Ed Warren - The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021)

Resident Evil Jill
Warner Bros. Pictures

Alongside the nerve-racking supernatural horror, a core component of The Conjuring films was the endearing relationship between demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren, who were played pitch-perfectly by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga. Director James Wan and writers Chad and Carey W. Hayes knew how to use their bond to put an uplifting love story at the heart of the first two films.

But when third entry The Devil Made Me Do It got a new writer and director onboard, the latest Conjuring film didn’t know what to do with itself. It tried to navigate between being a paranormal investigation with the same blockbuster scares audiences expected, while never succeeding at either. Likewise, this script took its own stab at the Warrens' love story and came up equally short.

The script attempts to create dramatic tension between the couple late into the third act by having the antagonist put Ed under their control, turning him into Jack Nicholson from The Shining as he pursues Lorraine during the climax.

Aside from artificially ramping up the stakes, this inclusion’s only purpose was to serve as a ham-fisted allegory for love triumphing over evil. Rushed and carrying little substance, nothing about this plot point worked.
