8 Horror Movies That Tricked You Into Rooting For The Villain

4. Us

Us Movie Review
Universal Pictures

The apparent villains of Us are a group of boiler-suit wearing doppelgängers called the Tethered, who terrorise their exact doubles, an otherwise normal family of four. Our entry point into this family is mother Adelaide, who actually encountered her own double as a kid and has been traumatised ever since.

The leader of the Doppelgängers and Adelaide's double, Red, does at least have the decency to explain why her family and others like them have such murderous aspirations. It turns out that everyone in America has one of these doubles and for decades they've been forced to live underground in squalor, without their own freedom and free will, and have finally had enough.

While that certainly gives them a sympathetic edge, you're still ultimately rooting for Adelaide and her family. After all, they've personally done nothing wrong, and a full family of parents and innocent children don't deserve to be slaughtered, right?

There's a small issue with this however, because it turns out that Adelaide isn't entirely who she says she is. In fact, she's actually one of the doubles from underground, who switched with the real Adelaide all those years back when they met as a child, essentially stealing her life.
