8 Horror Movies That Turned Badasses Into Wimps

2. Saw IV. - Jigsaw

Pennywise It Chapter 2
Lionsgate

Though ‘Jigsaw’ isn’t exactly a character himself because, like Ghostface, he is multiple people throughout the franchise, his concept and identity becomes weaker and weaker the longer the franchise drags on for.

The original concept for Jigsaw is a little goofy and we all need to admit that: the idea that John Kramer is dying of a brutal cancer and somehow manages to get all of the traps and prisoners sorted and executed perfectly, never mind that that’s what he decided to use his energy on in the first place, is ridiculous.

We can ignore this though, for the sake of enjoyment. When we get to Saw III, however, and Kramer kicks the bucket, we start an ever stupider pattern of apprentice after apprentice taking over and executing Kramer’s will from beyond the grave.

First apprentice Amanda starts off well in Saw II, even suffering in the movie's big trap before being revealed as a cold, badass double agent. Subsequent sequels immediately transform her into an emotionally unstable apprentice though, with Hoffman being revealed as the true, true heir to the jigsaw throne, undermining her role in the process.

Having Kramer’s plans drag on for years after his death is not only a tad excessive but also reads as plain stupid if you really think about it. It reduces Jigsaw from being an insanely intense cancer patietn/evil mastermind to a boring, played out old trope that we can’t wait to end.
