8 Horror Movies Twice As Terrifying On The Second Watch
6. Duel
The faceless horror is a horror movie trope that is terribly effective, simply because our own imaginations are our greatest enemy. No director, no special effects team, and no writer can create horrors more vivid or more terrifying than we can imagine for ourselves.
So, when we know nothing of the motives or the identity of the antagonist in a horror film, that immediately ratchets up the tension tenfold.
Rarely is this done more effectively than in Steven Spielberg's speed-fueled classic Duel.
Subsequent viewings don't diminish the film's superb sense of drama and danger, as the faceless driver of the imposing truck toys with David Mann along the road. Every time the truck driver waves Mann past, only for Mann to nearly collide with an oncoming car, your blood pressure spikes.
And after repeat viewings, you can't help but get a little nervous when you see a big rig looming ominously in your own rearview mirror.
