If you've sat down and watched Ruggero Deodato's sick and twisted masterpiece Cannibal Holocaust, you're probably a worse person by default. Don't worry, I am too - I've seen it twice.

The controversial film, which sparked outrage upon release, depicts an ill-fated trip into the jungles of South America, where a film crew find themselves going up against a cannibalistic tribe. Aside from being perverse in almost every way, Cannibal Holocaust looks incredibly real.

The myth goes, of course, that the movie looked so real that Deodato was placed under arrest as soon as it went into theatres. And although that sounds like a fabrication, it's actually true - the director really was arrested because everybody believed that the human deaths in the movie were real. This wasn't helped by the fact that tons of animals were butchered on camera - yes, for real - in the movie.

To make matters worse, Deodato also had his cast signed contracts stopping them from saying anything about the movie upon its release, which raised alarm bells - had he killed them all and hoped to use the contracts as a cover? Nope: eventually the director gathered the cast to prove he hadn't murdered them, but was charged - rightly - for the animal cruelty.
