8 Insanely Complex Movies That Will Blow Your Mind

3. Upstream Colour

Not the only Shane Carruth effort on this list, Upstream colour is the story of two lives unknowably intertwined, drawn to each other from a similar strange experience with a man that destroyed their lives by manipulating them with a mind-altering drug. Why did he manipulate them with a mind-altering drug, you ask? To plant larvae inside them, let the worms grow, and then get a friend to harvest them in the back of his van like some sort of weird organ-stealing racket.

It's weird. It's kind of scary really, but at the heart of it it's experimental art cinema that focusses on ideas instead of conventional stories. Or something pretentious like that.

There's an inextricable link between the humans, farmed pigs, and a batch of orchids: one never explicitly uncovered throughout the narrative and left to us to figure out. If you want the spoilery goods, then the wider picture is an unknowable, organic life form that grows through these three life-cycles, absorbing identity and DNA as it goes about its mysterious way. How is exists, or why, or why the 'Thief' and the 'Sampler' are involved are inconsequential.

Even with the wider context, it still makes about as much sense as sharing mental existence with both a pig and a flower sounds like it would.
