8 Little Known Nuances That Made Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn Awesome
5. Her Tattoos Tell A Sordid Past
Robbie spent more than three hours in the make-up chair every single day in order to be transformed into Harley Quinn, having her skin painted almost entirely white - given the character's typically skimpy attire - while being fitted for a wig and costume and having 20 temporary tattoos applied.
And much like The Joker's infamous ink, Harley's tattoos actually tell her character's story - albeit in less invasive and more subtle terms than her murderous boyfriend.
Her body is adorned with numerous tattoos singing the praises of The Joker and their relationship, referring to herself as "Daddy's 'Lil Monster", expressing her love for her "Puddin'" and, hilariously, including a "Lucky You" declaration just above her pubic area.
But the tattoos extend beyond merely conveying Harley's mental state and her toxic relationship with The Joker.
While some of the more stylised tattoos were clearly created by professionals prior to Harley being arrested, the cruder ones across her legs have a decidedly more interesting origin story.
"She did these herself in prison. They’re stick and poke tattoos, prison-style tattoos, that you do when you don’t have a tattoo gun. She did them herself out of boredom and desperation."
Given that these tattoos appear upside down, it's clear that Harley administered them herself with the rudimentary stick-and-poke method Robbie mentioned, as is ironically quite popular among frugal millennials nowadays.
From what we've seen of the upcoming Birds of Prey so far, it seems that this inked storytelling is set to continue, with her previous "Harley + Puddin'" tattoo now modified with the Puddin' name crossed out.
With persistent rumours that Harley apparently dumps The Joker in the movie, it makes perfect sense that she'd have her body reflect this lifestyle change.
