8 Little Known Nuances That Made Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn Awesome
3. She Styled Herself On Blondie's Debbie Harry
Unsurprisingly, a ton of time and effort went into selecting the final design for Suicide Squad's Harley Quinn, and Robbie was herself allowed to collaborate with the costume department on the character's look.
Though Ayer and Robbie did consider having Robbie wear the traditional jester costume for the entire movie - rather than the brief cameo fans ended up with - Robbie eventually settled on a more grounded variant with some ultra-cool real-world inspiration.
After trying on countless riffs on Harley's attire, costume designer Kate Hawley showed Robbie a picture of Blondie's lead singer Debbie Harry in her youth, sporting a torn t-shirt, studded belt and shorts combo that immediately won Robbie over.
As you can see from the comparison above, the inspiration is significant, and given that Jared Leto's Joker was himself inspired by David Bowie's "Thin White Duke" years, it's rather apt that Harley took the lead from one of music's all-time legendary female punks.
