8 MCU Villains Who Are Totally Underrated

5. Surtur

Surtur is in many ways the opposite of Kaecilius, at least in terms of being an underrated villain. He might play second fiddle to Hela in Ragnarok, but that doesn’t mean he’s worth discarding altogether.

Just like Doctor Strange, Thor: Ragnarok has one main villain running through the plot (Kaecilius/Hela) and one big bad monster (Dormammu/Surtur). However, while the Faltine beast came away as the memorable one from Strange, Thor’s sister definitely stole the show in Ragnarok.

Because of this, Surtur joins Marvel’s hall of forgotten villains. However, compared to Malekith, Destroyer and Kurse from earlier Thor movies, it’s absolutely ludicrous for him to be in the same bucket as them.

Ragnarok was a rebirth for Thor, and the first step to making the Marvel Cosmic Universe larger than just the Guardians Of The Galaxy. While Hela’s character arc is crucial to the plot of the movie, the tone is set by Surtur. He could have been another forgettable demonesque villain, but the movie filled him with an over-the-top, 80s action movie attitude which paid off perfectly.

As the bookend of the movie, Surtur is a key element of Ragnarok. It’s disappointing that despite the praise the film gets, he’s often left out.
