8 Mistakes That Will Ruin Upcoming Movies
3. Cloverfield Connections - Overlord
The Mistake: Tacking on the Cloverfield universe connections.
After the excellent 10 Cloverfield Lane it seemed like the franchise could do no wrong, but the lukewarm response to The Cloverfield Paradox has cast a sizable shadow over the future of J.J. Abrams' interconnected Clover-verse.
Ironically, the worst thing about the movie is also the one thing that made it such an exciting prospect; its place in the Cloverfield cinematic universe.
A final reference to the Cloverfield monster was literally tacked on, and overall, it was abundantly clear that the Cloverfield brand had been clumsily mixed in with a pre-existing story (the movie started life as its own standalone tale, called The God Particle). This made both the main plot and the Cloverfield element feel undercooked, resulting in a very unsatisfying couple of hours.
All eyes are now on Overlord, the purported fourth Cloverfield movie, and its late 2018 release. More specifically, all eyes are now on Overlord as we watch to see if it will make the same fatal mistake as its predecessor.
Overlord has been gestating since 2007 (before the first Cloverfield came out), so again, there's a chance that Cloverfield connections will be shoehorned into a pre-existing story. Like Paradox, this could completely kill the movie, disappointing Cloverfield fans as well as people who just want a great solitary story.
But hopefully this isn't the case. Overlord's script has been reworked several times, so there is a chance it's been built with Cloverfield in mind all along.
