J J Abrams' first movie Cloverfield reached critical acclaim for his unique and sometimes travel sickness-inducing use of the found footage handheld camera method to capture an alien invasion on the streets of Manhattan. Eight years after the first film, the Bad Robot studios announced a second instalment was coming, with promises to be just as spooky as the first.

The concept followed Michelle, who wakes up to find herself in the confounds of an underground bunker with an explanation from her captor that there is an apocalypse happening outside and that he has saved her from perishing. Throughout the movie, the audience are left to wonder who to trust as Michelle and her fellow bunker mate attempt to escape multiple times.

In the final act conclusion, she manages to escape as the only survivor in the bunker, opening the doors to the grand reveal of... aliens. And not just aliens like Cloverfield, as now they have robotic futuristic features. Cool, right?

Most fans and audiences disagreed, as the credits rolled and people were left wondering if all that was for nothing, as Michelle meets her demise at the hands of the robot alien apocalypse happening around her. It was an interesting twist - the captor wasn't really a villain after all, but it didn't play out well in the long run.
