In terms of longevity, William Hurt’s Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross has been around nearly as long as any MCU character – with Ross first appearing back in the second ever MCU movie, The Incredible Hulk.

As a character, Red Hulk was first introduced to comic book fans in 2008 – with a two-year mystery culminating in the reveal that Thunderbolt Ross was the aggressive, murderous Red Hulk. Despite his initial carnage-causing ways, mind, Red Hulk would eventually become a member of the Avengers and later part of the Thunderbolts.

Where the MCU is concerned, the idea of Ross assuming the Red Hulk identity has most certainly been discussed, with Red Hulk at times planned to appear in Captain America: Civil War and then in Avengers: Endgame. Likewise, William Hurt has openly talked about how he’d like for his character to become Red Hulk at some point.

Given how Ross is confirmed to be appearing in next May’s Black Widow – a movie set between the events of Civil War and Infinity War – seeing him tinkering with something that could start the Red Hulk ball in motion during that film just makes sense.
