8 MORE Deleted Scenes That Nearly Ruined Great Movies
3. Dante Dies - Clerks
The slacker comedy Clerks was the voice a generation in 1994. The film’s plot entirely revolves around the lives and trivial conversations of dead-end retail workers Dante and Randall. It was a light-hearted romp that showed Generation X’ers everywhere that they weren’t alone.
In an ending that never made it to the final film, Clerks takes a stunningly dark turn. Closing the Quick Stop grocery store at the end of the day, Dante is suddenly approached and shot dead by a thief. Instead of the warmth of Can’t Even Tell by Soul Asylum playing over the credits, we instead get the sounds of a till being raided followed by deathly silence.
This sequence comes out of nowhere so quickly that, if it had made it to release, the final feeling of the movie would’ve been vastly different. Considering the characters spend Clerks discussing oral sex and Death Star employee rights, it would’ve felt totally out of place and completely depressing to suddenly kill off its lead.
Not only should we celebrate this not making into the film for the sake of the movie itself, but its infamous existence has set the stage for a sequence in the upcoming Clerks 3. As seen in the trailer, Dante remarks “I’m not letting you kill me off”, “what if there’s a sequel?”. So something good can come of this terrible deleted scene at last.
