8 More Movie Trailers That Blatantly Lied To You
1. Suicide Squad
What The Trailer Promised:
Fun! The original trailer, set to Bohemian Rhapsody, drew a wave of comparisons with Guardians of the Galaxy, and promised an exuberantly enthusiastic examination of the Suicide Squad in their first live action cinematic debut.
It didn’t look too goofy, but a dark movie willing to fall in with some of the humour intrinsic to the characters. And then there’s Joker! Jared Leto’s Joker was set to be a big part of the film as its primary villain.
What We Got:
An absolute tonal mess of ideas thrown on top of each other. First off, there’s very little Joker at all, particularly compared with how much his presence was pushed across the trailers. In fact, so much of Joker’s material was apparently cut the Leto himself kicked off about it.
Then, all the levity the trailer promised was either absent or felt totally out of place and we were left with another dismal DCEU movie that was too ashamed of itself to lean into the craziness of its characters.
The plethora of licensed music was also a bit of a con, as, unlike in Guardians where it’s sprinkled across the entire film, they crammed as many hits into the opening ten minutes as possible before apparently forgetting the tone they set with the opening tunes for the remaining couple of hours.
