3. Venom Cut Out The Symbiote's Character Arc

Venom is a surprisingly solid movie, but it's far from the film it could have been. It's clear that Sony's first stab at a new Spider-Man extended universe encountered something of an identity crisis during production, struggling to realise whether it wanted to be a horror movie or a comedy.

It didn't help either that 40 minutes of footage was trimmed from the final edit, the majority of which focused on Eddie and Brock bonding together (both literally and metaphorically). According to Tom Hardy, most of this included wacky slapstick comedy bits, but they sounded as though they would have added greater clarity to just how the two characters ended up becoming friends.

In the final film, Venom decides that he wants to stay on Earth and keep hitching a ride with Eddie (rather than taking over him completely) seemingly out of the blue, which is a bit jarring. The alien's transformation from villain into anti-hero is never fully explained, and there's a good chance that a lot of that arc was lost in the material which ended up on the cutting room floor.
