8 Most Genius Moments In Deadpool's Marketing Campaign
6. The April Fool's Day Prank
Like every other Deadpool fan out there, I was breathing a sigh of relief over the fact that Fox hadn't completely f**ked up his iconic costume. However, with that worry out of the way, it was time to start fretting about the movie's rating. While a PG-13 Deadpool could work, there's no denying that it would be a movie which couldn't truly do the character justice. It needed an R-Rating. There are a lot of problems there however. An R-Rating significantly reduces how many people can see a movie, and with Deadpool's non R-Rated comics selling so well, surely there was no way Fox would put a dent in the movie's box office takings by cutting off younger moviegoers? Even Ryan Reynolds didn't seem sure about what the plan was, stating in interviews that Deadpool would either be a big budget PG-13 blockbuster or a lower budgeted R-Rated movie. A report then surfaced on April 1st stating that Deadpool would be PG-13. No one was sure if it was a prank, but comments from Reynolds on Deadpool made it clear that it was very real: "A PG-13 #deadpool will still have 4th wall breaking, a shit-ton of action and at least 3 chimichangas. Zero need to panic. I promise." That didn't soothe hysterical fanboys (myself included) who were bemused and heartbroken at the prospect of a watered down take on the character. Later that day, an interview with Reynolds surfaced in which he talked about the movie from the Vancouver set and commented on the PG-13 rating. If you were lucky enough to watch it before it went viral, you were no doubt taken in by it...until Reynolds - in full costume as Deadpool - smashed the interview over the head with a lighting unit and confirmed that the whole thing was an April Fool's Day prank and that the movie would of course be R-Rated. There's not a more perfect way they could have chosen to announce the news!
