8 Most Hotly Anticipated 2016 Films (And Why They'll Be Disappointing)

4. Ghostbusters

What It Is: Is it a reboot, a remake or a sequel? Or perhaps a mixture of all three? Whatever it is, the 2016 version of Ghostbusters is directed by Paul Feig and stars Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones. Why It'll Be Disappointing: The 2016 reboot of Ghostbusters is very much a case of €œwho asked for this?€. It seems to be a project that fundamentally misunderstands what fans wanted in the first place. What did fans want? They wanted a Ghostbusters film starring the remaining living members of the original cast. Of course, that was never a great idea in the first place (it was unlikely such a project could live up to the greatness of the original). Nevertheless, what they really didn't want was a Paul Feig-helmed Melissa McCarthy comedy. There's absolutely nothing wrong with a female Ghostbusters cast. Such a project has the potential to be quite interesting. The problem is the kind of film that's being made. You've only to take a brief look at Paul Feig's directorial filmography to understand what I'm talking about. 2011's Bridesmaids, 2013's The Heat and 2015's Spy...all relatively funny films in their own right, but a far cry from the kind of humour found in the original Ghostbusters. The humour in Feig's films (especially the ones starring Melissa McCarthy) tends to chase randomness, excessive swearing and explicitness, with a bunch of dirty jokes and gross-out humour for good measure. It's just such a massive distance from what fans were hoping would happen for years, as the various original cast members seemed to get closer and closer to reprising their roles until suddenly it all fell apart.
