8 Most Hotly Anticipated 2016 Films (And Why They'll Be Disappointing)

5. Star Trek Beyond

What It Is: Star Trek Beyond is the third entry in the rebooted Star Trek film series, the first and second entries being helmed by J.J. Abrams. At the moment we have no idea of its plot. Why It'll Be Disappointing: Two words: Justin Lin. Don't get me wrong, Justin Lin is an entirely competent director. His work on the Fast And Furious series is entirely serviceable, but it's the farthest thing away from what the Star Trek film series needs. I know, I know, the reboot is targeting a much wider audience, but there's only so many liberties you can take before it just becomes insulting. J.J. Abrams' first 2009 Star Trek film was seen by fans of the show as completely missing the point, but it was loved by many who had never seen the show before, and did extremely well with critics. Abrams' second entry, Star Trek Into Darkness, was less well-received. One of the main problems it faced was that Abrams' Star Trek films are essentially sci-fi action movies, and they come with the same problems that normal action movie sequels do. How do you improve except by making the set pieces crazier and explosions even bigger? Coupled with the unnecessary use of an iconic Star Trek villain, the cracks began to show. Though many hoped that the third entry would be a more focused entry like the first, they've decided to abandon all semblance of restraint and hand the reigns over to Justin Lin, one of the industry's leading action and stunt directors. Fans hoping for a return to form after the shaky Into Darkness are going to be severely disappointed. Again, the ridiculous tone of the trailer is all you really need to see. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XRVD32rnzOw
