8 Most Overrated Films Of Summer 2016

1. Finding Dory

Finding Dory 9
Pixar

The last time Pixar made a sequel that shifted focus to the potentially one-note side-character we got Cars 2, so it’s definitely fair to say Finding Nemo 2 could have been a lot worse and heartless than Finding Dory. That doesn’t mean it’s a classic either though. Actually, fitting of modern Pixar, it’s pretty average, a fun animated film but not one that sits on the same shelf as their 00s run of form.

What it does best is the handling of the protagonist switch; Dory is given real depth and her plight is framed beautifully in the wider events of the first film, and with her there’s a whole tank of interesting, flawed new characters to explore.

It’s in the narrative where problems emerge. Plainly, it’s a retread of the original’s plot, just with the addition of some disability subtext, which is certainly nice, but not quite enough to justify a whole movie, while the entire third act is jumbled and rushed; no Pixar film has fumbled the emotional twist quite like this. And then you have the whole “Hank driving a car” sequence, which is plan embarrassing, ripping off Toy Story 2 and ending with a perplexing musical choice.

The film has been met with overwhelming critical praise and predictable box office success, but when viewed objectively (or even in comparison to the original), it doesn't quite hold up.
