8 Most Underrated James Bond Films
4. Tomorrow Never Dies
Tomorrow Never Dies is an outlier on this list, since it's the one that seems to get ripped on for no clear reason. At least with the other 007 (sorry) of these movies, it's clearer as to why they've been divisive but Tomorrow Never Dies' not terribly good reputation doesn't come from a particularly clear source. Perhaps, like with other Bond movies such as Spectre, expectations were high because it was following a franchise classic?
Whatever the reason, Tomorrow Never Dies is a much-underrated instalment of the series. The film's troubled production (which Brosnan compared to "pulling teeth") does show a bit through the film's slightly messy editing, the plot is familiar and Elliot Carver (Jonathan Pryce) is a cringe-worthy Rupert Murdoch parody with the stupidest Bond villain plan ever (yes, even worse than the water thing from Quantum of Solace), but other than that this is a very fun action movie that gets many of its other elements bang-on.
Pierce Brosnan is a brilliant Bond once again, main Bond Girl Wai Lin (Michelle Yeoh) is fantastic, the action sequences are absolutely kick-ass and as a whole, the film offers plenty of escapism, joy, suspense and humour - in other words, it gives viewers the kind of delightful viewing you want from a James Bond film.
It's certainly not perfect but it is an overall successful work that really deserves more credit than it gets.
