8 Most Unexplainable Horror Movie Moments

5. The Egg Chamber Blue Light In 'Alien'

The Ring
20th Century Fox

Alien is one of the best science-fiction horror movies ever made, and if there's one thing the movie gets right, it's the building of tension on a grand scale. When the crew of the Nostromo are woken up from their stasis chambers, they move to investigate a distress signal coming from a nearby moon, and all hell breaks loose.

They find an ancient alien spacecraft primed for exploration. There's no telling how long the ship has been there, and the only indication is a dead alien sitting in a large chair in the center of a massive room. Deeper inside the ship, Kane discovers a chamber filled with eggs.

The chamber is sectioned off with a blue light, which he breaks through to get a closer look. Doing so appears to trigger one of the eggs into motion, and as he investigates, a facehugger alien rushes from the egg and attaches to his face.

We all know what happens after that, but we don't know much about the egg chamber. The blue light is a distinctive feature of the scene; yet, the movie doesn't explain how an ancient spacecraft devoid of all power has what appears to be a still-functioning lighting system. More than that, it's not clear what it is — is it containing the eggs, or is it being used for ambiance? Who knows?

The only thing we know for certain about the blue light is that it was provided by The Who, but that doesn't do much for explaining the scene.
