8 Movie Characters That Hollywood Has F*cked Up Twice
4. Dr. Victor Frankenstein - Mary Shelley's Frankenstein/Victor Frankenstein
The Character: Frankenstein is the name of the Doctor, not the monster! Just a friendly reminder as we move into this next entry, because Hollywood have rendered the monster inherent to Mary Shelley's classic novel to generally successful results. Dr. Victor Frankenstein, however - well, you'd think that the studios would have managed to deliver a more inspired effort than the ones that continue to stink up the cinema screens. The First Time: Kenneth Branagh should have totally knocked this out of the park, given that - on paper, at least - he has all the makings of a great Dr. Victor Frankenstein. Instead, 1994's Mary Shelley's Frankenstein offered audiences one of his worst performances to date - one that (like the film) can't decide whether to be intently serious or incredibly hammy. Branagh appears to spend most of his time battling the urge to just go bananas. The Second Time: Hollywood's latest effort to bring Frankenstein failed with the shockingly awful 2015 movie Victor Frankenstein. In this version, the good doctor is played by one James McAvoy, an otherwise capable actor whose performances - like Branagh's - can't seem to make its mind up. Most of the time McAvoy tries his best, but he's an unconvincing Dr. Frankenstein and all the indecisiveness renders him plainly boring.
Sam Hill is an ardent cinephile and has been writing about film professionally since 2008. He harbours a particular fondness for western and sci-fi movies.
