8 Movie Characters With Completely Irrational Fears

6. The Mummy's Imhotep Gets Egyptian Mythology Wrong, Becomes Scared Of Cats

High priest Imhotep is a man-killing, essence-sucking supervillain, afraid of nothing and no one - except, of course, for cats. Tiny, adorable cats. At one point in The Mummy, Brendan Fraser's Rick O'Connell literally saves lives by shoving a hissing little mog in Imhotep's face, causing him to flee the scene in terror. According to the movie, Imhotep can't deal with feline because of their association with the guardians of the underworld; only when Imhotep is fully regenerated will he no longer fear them. There are a few problems with this, however, and they all stem from the fact that Imhotep appears to have gotten his Egyptian mythology wrong. For starters, cats were sacred in ancient Egypt - not feared, but almost deified - while the guardians of the underworld were depicted as lions (occasionally with human heads), not trained house cats. Even then, their job wasn't to drag people back to hell, but to act as mere gatekeepers - meaning Imhotep appears to have gotten spectacularly confused in those 2,000 years he spent being a corpse.
