1. George Lucas
Then there is the man who started it all. The concept of fans existed before George Lucas, but when Star Wars came out in 1977, the fanbase was born (well, let me not forget Star Trek's contribution to fandoms via Gene Roddenberry). George Lucas created a phenomenon that would reshape how fans enjoyed films, mainly through the addition of a rich mythology, spectacular characters, and vivid worlds. Yes, we all know the debauchery otherwise remembered as the prequel trilogy, but we still can't ignore that George Lucas practically created minions that could do his every bidding. Although Indiana Jones is also George Lucas's baby, Star Wars is the mega-iconic legend that has changed the world in its own right. Halloween costumes inspired by the saga, themed weddings, theme park attractions, endless books and fan-fiction... these are just a tiny part of how fans have shown their love for George Lucas and the films that came from his within the far reaches of his mind. Pop-culture is riddled with references to the Star Wars films, entire conventions are organised with the sole purpose of celebrating the movies, and there's even a real life 501st legion where people march in parades around the world to show their love for Star Wars. People even name their kids after characters from this franchise. There is not much that needs to be presented as evidence towards the claim of George Lucas having a hardcore fandom, despite the fact that it might have dwindled somewhat today. His works gave fans a world in which they could live and experience fandom in the most dedicated and passionate of ways.
