7. Friday The 13th Part 2
A good way to separate true horror nerds from the pretenders is to ask “Who’s the killer in Friday The 13th?” If they answer “Jason!” then they clearly didn’t see the original, where it was actually Jason’s mum Pamela doing the rampaging.
The first film was really a whodunit, where a mysterious killer works their way through a group of teens at an abandoned summer camp. In the end, the cuddly Mrs Voorhees is revealed to be responsible, and it's revealed she went crazy with grief after her son drowned in the lake.
The movie ends with her head divorcing her body, so she was replaced with the suddenly alive Jason for the sequel. Jason would go on to become the icon of the series, to the point that poor Mrs Voorhees has nearly been forgotten. While Jason’s cool and all, this shouldn’t undersell the late, great Betsy Palmer’s contribution to the original movie, and her performance paved the way for Jason to do his thing.
