8 Movie Franchises That Have Gender Swapped

1. Evil Dead (2013)

Evil Dead Mia
TriStar Pictures

Bruce Campbell is a genre legend, and in the role of Ash, he’s downright irreplaceable. The makers of the Evil Dead remake were smart enough to realise this, so they created a new heroine called Mia instead.

The remake has a smart twist on the old haunted cabin scenario, where a group of friends gather to help Mia go cold turkey off a nasty drug habit. Naturally, when she starts seeing demons they’re a little sceptical, but soon dismemberment and maimings really spoil the retreat.

Mia doesn’t have the cult appeal of Ash and she lacks one-liners, but she’s a more relatable character who suffers through the worst detox session ever, and believably toughens up when it comes time to wield a chainsaw.

With Bruce Campbell returning for the Evil Dead TV show we’re not likely to see a direct sequel, but if Mia popped up on the show she’d be most welcome.

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
