With many a limb flailing and punch being thrown during the average big-screen one-on-one battle, it's only natural for the odd mistaken legitimate connection between an actor's face and their co-star's knuckles to occur.

In the case of Chris Pine and Idris Elba's climactic Star Trek Beyond fisticuffs, however, rather than trying to paper over the latter very much smacking the former in the eye when performing their highly physical showdown, Justin Lin had a better idea.

Pine was left with one hell of a shiner after Elba's accidental impact with his face. So, the director simply had Captain James T. Kirk sport that very legit looking black-eye throughout the remainder of his time on-screen in the wake of it going down whilst shooting.

Things couldn't have turned out better in the end for Lin, with the director eventually explaining, “Continuity-wise, it worked out. That black eye played so well in the rest of the movie.”

And just like that, a botched piece of choreography soon evolved into a new layer of authenticity that Lin very much put a spotlight on for the remainder of the threequel.
