8 Movie Remakes That Pissed Off The Original Creators

1. Bad Lieutenant: Port Of Call New Orleans

The remake of Bad Lieutenant is another one of those movies where Nicolas Cage goes insane. Remember that scene where he threatens to kill a defenceless old lady, verbally abuses her, and then pulls out a gun? Yep. Cage gonna Cage.

But this madness wasn't just exclusive to the screen. The movie was surrounded by drama that stemmed from Abel Ferrara's (the director of the 1992 original) complete and utter disdain towards the remake, with the filmmaker making some truly wild comments aimed at everyone involved in the production, including Cage himself.

In an over-the-top reaction, he told The Guardian that everyone involved in the remake should "die in hell", and in a similar manner to Alan Parker's opinion on Fame, he likened the notion of remakes to having something stolen from him:

"It's like when you get robbed... it's just a horrible feeling and I don't understand why they would do it. When they announced it, I called Harvey [Keitel, the star of the original] and he says, 'Yeah, it's bad. But don't say anything stupid, Abel.'"

But Ferrara didn't stop there. He labelled the writer of the remake as an "idiot", and also called out Cage for having the nerve to take on the role that Harvey Keitel had inhabited in the original: "does Nic Cage need the money?!"

On a separate occasion, he also said that he hoped the team behind the remake would die in an explosion. Someone please take this man to PR school.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
