8 Movie Sequels You Didn't Know Were Coming In 2019

One of 2017's biggest surprise hits, 47 Meters Down made over $50 million worldwide on a meagre $5.5 million budget, and got everybody talking for a brief period during the summer.

Very soon after, a sequel - 48 Meters Down - was set into motion. The original detailed the struggles of two women as they fought to survive while trapped in shark-infested waters at the bottom of the ocean, and the second instalment will follow a similar formula.

This time around, the action will take place in Brazil (the first took place in Mexico), and will follow a group of girls holidaying in the coastal paradise of Recife. The girls soon hear about some hidden underwater ruins near their location, but when they arrive, they discover that those ruins aren't quite as uninhabited as they appeared.

Johannes Roberts (who helmed the first, and is currently working on Strangers: Prey At Night) is set to write and direct the film, so there's a chance the sequel will connect to the first beyond simply using its name and basic concept. But, given how the first film ended, it's not clear which characters would be able to make a comeback - if any.

Still, shark movies generally prove quite entertaining, so if 48 Meters Down can capture that feeling of claustrophobia while delivering on the gory kills, it should prove a scarily good time at the movies.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
